MAPUSA: Mumbai FC came within sniffing distance of scripting their biggest upset in the I-League this season when they led defending champions Dempo SC 2-0 until the 68th minute and looked good enough to pump in a couple more in their 18th round I-League encounter at the Duler Stadium, Mapusa, on Saturday.
However, that was not to be, as Mumbai FC coach Khalid Jamil plainly put it later, "Football is a funny game, anything can happen." The former junior India captain knows best the quirks of the game as his boys lost their concentration and the plot.
To add to their woes, referee A Rowan of the Services lost control of the match in the final quarter hour. Realising their opportunity, Dempo made the most of it and turned the game on its head. They pumped in two goals in four minutes, the equalizer coming in the 89th minute before all hell broke loose and the Mumbai players lost their cool ending in a free for all. The outcome was the sending off of Clifford Miranda and a yellow card for Man-of-the-Match Abhishek Yadav, before sanity was restored and the added time carried out.
The 2-2 draw saw Dempo stay static in third place with 35 points while Mumbai too stayed in sixth place on 26 points.
